POULTRY PRODUCER JESPER CLAUSEN
Implementation of heat recovery from ventilation air in two chicken stables
A solid agreement with Danish Energy Consulting reduced the energy consumption of poultry producer Jesper Clausen’s chicken stables significantly.
After having compared offers from multiple suppliers, poultry producer Jesper Clausen, Nykøbing M. Denmark, felt most secure with the project procedure of Danish Energy Consulting. Thus, he chose to cooperate with them.
Danish Energy Consulting work by the concept of ’no cure, no pay’. This means, if the results from the screening of energy saving potential are insufficient, Jesper Clausen will not have to pay a fee. The potential for savings, however, did turn out to be quite significant for the chicken stables.
The starting point was a traditional chicken stable without use of heat recovery.
FARMER MADS NIÆR KRISTENSEN
Reduced energy consumption and an improved indoor environment in piggery
In cooperation with Danish Energy Consulting, farmer Mads Niær Kristensen has insulated his piggeries to consume less energy and hereby create a better environment for the animals.
Mads Niær Kristensen produce 40,000 piglets yearly. To grow and strive, the pigs are dependent on a sufficient amount of heat in the farrowing barns. For four weeks, the pigs live inside small dens. These dens are insulated with mats to help maintain the temperature. The heat in the dens is provided by special heat lamps.
»The dens have earlier been insulated with some mats in hard rubber, but they were not very sufficient at spreading the heat, which was concentrated just below the heat bulb. Now, these mats have been renewed with a new type of energy mat. This new mat is much better at distributing the heat to the piglets and is much more comfortable for the piglets to lie on. This has led to a significant energy reduction and a much better environment for the pigs and their well-being,« says Mads Niær Kristensen.
When he was considering the investment of the new heat mats, he contacted Danish Energy Consulting whom he had earlier received consulting from when renewing a straw-fired boiler.
»After a great collaboration with Danish Energy Consulting when renewing our straw-fired boiler, it was evident to contact Danish Energy Consulting again, when wondering if subsidies would be possible with the renewing of mats,« says Mads Niær Kristensen.
From Danish Energy Consulting’s calculations, a subsidy for the renewing of the mats would result in a repayment period of about a year.
»We are now able to use a lot less heat lamps than earlier. We have measured the monthly energy saving to 4,000 kWh based on the very shorter running time for the heat lamps. Where the lamps earlier had to run for 14 days, it is now only necessary for them to run for 9 days. This corresponds to only a third of the energy consumption needed for the lamps,« says Mads Niær Kristensen.
»Danish Energy Consulting has a very professional approach. There are many regulations to keep track on, and Danish Energy Consulting have the necessary knowledge that secures us getting a fine subsidy for our investment. We were actually positively surprised when we realised the subsidy ended up larger than expected. So we would unquestionably recommend Danish Energy Consulting to other farmers,« says Mads Niær Kristensen.
»With the help from Danish Energy Consulting, we were able to make the necessary calculations to receive a fine subsidy for investments and a short repayment period. It is, thus, a really great business case, where we get many years of usage of the mats after the investment is paid off,« says farmer Mads Niær Kristensen.
